This morning I opened Google Search Console — same as every other morning — then answered a couple of emails, and that was that.

Eighteen months of working toward this moment: a cover reveal, ARC readers, query emails, rebuilding our newsletter, a pre-order campaign, the actual publication day itself — and this “sameness” is what it looks like on the other side. I keep waiting for the preparations to pay off, for something exciting to happen, and it just… doesn’t.

I found out after talking it over with a friend that there’s a term for this. I didn’t make it up and neither did my friend in an attempt to make me feel better about it. Psychologists call this the arrival fallacy: the letdown we feel after reaching a long-anticipated goal and discovering the ground doesn’t move the way we thought it would. I’m not interested in writing about the psychology. But, I figure that if I needed to know I wasn’t inventing a weird, amorphous feeling out of nothing, then you and a lot of other people probably need to know it, too. Arrival fallacy is a documented, shared, and deeply human experience. And it helps me to know that others who’ve crossed a big finish line have stood exactly where I’m standing and thought: that’s it?

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="640" height="427" src="https://metaphorpublications.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/stocksnap-people-2604035_640.jpg" alt="A figure stands arms outstretched and on one foot on a beach, in shallow water, with the reflection clearly visible. And honestly, I’ve been arguing down that “failure narrative” in my own head since October 2nd. Just thinking about saying any of this publicly made my chest tighten, because I know how this reads from the outside: book comes out, nothing happens, I’m shit as a writer and this proves it. It’s the story everyone’s afraid of, even though so many of us have to live with it in our heads.

But I’m here to tell you that for us, nothing ended on October 1st except our book’s pre-publication status, that is. We didn’t end, the book itself didn’t end, and the work is not over. We just moved into the next phase, and that’s nothing to feel down about.

The Indie Publishing Myth We All Got Sold

Somewhere along the way, the indie-author world absorbed this idea that a launch either pops immediately or it’s failed — that the first weekend tells you everything, and if it doesn’t, you should be “turning in your writer’s card.” It’s a myth that many in the industry sell, but has nothing to do with how books actually find their readers.

Paladin’s Grace, for example, is still selling six years after it came out. Six years. Nobody warns you that the real timeline for a new book finding its audience was never going to be two or three days. After three weeks, a sales number too small to feel like proof of anything, one likely DNF, and a guess at fifteen new newsletter signups — that’s not evidence of failure! In fact, it’s just the baseline, the starting place for our future work.

I know that, but knowing it and feeling it are not the same thing. I’m not going to pretend they are just because I’m the one with fingers on the keyboard this time.

Facing “Book Launch Letdown” On Purpose

I’ve done enough of my own inner work over the years to know that fear should never get the only vote on anything — not in how I write, and not in how I live. So when something like this shows up, my learned instinct is to turn and gaze right at it rather than let it run the show from the shadows. That differs from “performative bravery”, and it took someone pointing out the difference for me to actually see it. One is choosing to face the thing on my own terms. The other is just fear wearing a different costume. And as soon as I identify any fear, I choose the former.

So this is me, doing that, and not because publishing a book that hasn’t set a launch-day record for sales is some kind of failure I need to confess. It’s because this is the valley, not the peak. It is a real part of this journey, and who writes about it honestly? We usually get either the triumphant launch post or the quietly-abandoned-Substack version, and nothing in between that just says: I built toward this for a year and a half, and now I’m back to checking Search Console and answering email, and it just feels damned weird.

You’re Not Failing

If you’re in your own version of this — the thing you’ve worked toward for months or years finally happened, and the ground just… didn’t move — then we’re in good company. I don’t have a five-step plan for you, but I don’t think we really need one. What I needed was just somebody to say this part to me out loud, so now I’m saying it to you:

Image by Talie Scrap from Pixabay

You are not behind.

You are not failing.

You are, very simply, in the part of the story that doesn’t get written about because it isn’t dramatic enough to make the highlight reel.
